The Italian cooperative movement counted not much more than a thousand or so firms in 1890, in addition to numerous popular banks and rural cooperative banks. A hundred years later there were 150,000 cooperatives. Already at the end of the 19th Century, cooperative businesses were beginning to join together in consortia; the aim of these first consortia was to coordinate their activity so that they would be in a position to establish larger consortia and to form sector-based and general federations.

This virtual room, which seeks to map the Italian cooperative movement, contains an overview of the four existing cooperative federation with their histories; the territorial mapping of coops; and the profile of those coops about which we were able to access material.
